I first brewed this beer in a tiny one-car garage in Beaverton, back in the middle of 2020—one of the most discouraging years in many of our lives. I can still remember the day our then-8-year-old son came up to my wife and me, squeezed us tightly, and told us he was lonely as he shed tears he’d been holding back for a while. It absolutely broke our hearts, because we felt the sentiment to our very cores.

We had moved to the beautiful Oregon coast—in Newport—in March of 2019, from Southern California, where he was born and raised and where most of our close relatives still live. We came for many reasons, but mainly because I’d found a better job opportunity that would help our family financially. But as beautiful as that coastal city is, and as hopeful as we were about this new chapter, it didn’t take long for us to realize we weren’t happy there. We felt completely isolated from everything and everyone we knew. So in February of 2020, we packed up and moved again—this time to Beaverton, Oregon—closer to a few friends in Portland. And for a moment, everything was feeling right. Fast-forward about a month, and we’re right back in isolation, lonely all over again.

Hence this beers name, and If I remember correctly, this might have been one of the those first beers our now-brewer, @maxwelllschmitt and another friend, helped me can at home back then. It was either this or Hail—memory’s a little fuzzy. That’s why he became our captain on the brew deck and I’m forever thankful for him, our team, the friends who’ve helped keep this project going, especially during those times, thankful that my wife and son feel at home again and that those isolated days are behind us.

Be kind to one another. If those times taught us anything, it’s that we all need each other.
